I found out last week about the big announcement: the next installment for the Pokemon franchise! Pokemon X and Y are scheduled for release in Japan, Europe, Australia and the Americas in October of this year. Needless to say, I am very excited and will eagerly anticipate the arrival of the next generation of Pokemon.
Pokemon X and Y, along with having a new region and new monsters to catch, also is the first main series game to be released on Nintendo 3DS. As a result, Gamefreak is ditching the 2D sprites and creating 3D graphics for the locations, trainers, and Pokemon. This does pose a small problem. I don't exactly own a 3DS yet, but I planned on getting one eventually, and this has convinced me. Well player Nintendo. Well played.
After seeing the Pokemon designs, I got even more excited. Froakie, Chespin, and Fennekin all have adorable designs, though right now I'm leaning towards Fennekin. We'll have to wait and see the evolved forms to make a decision. The starters designs are cool and unique, but to me they don't feel like a new generation. They look like they could easily fit in with the Unova Pokemon if you ask, me though I'm sure that's entirely a bad thing.
Perhaps even more exciting than the starters are the legendaries. Xerneas and Yveltal have some of the coolest designs we've seen in Pokemon in a long time in my opinion. While Zekrom, Reshiram, and Kyurem had cool designs, they were not particularly imaginative. I didn't personally care for the designs of Palkia or Dialga, and even though I thought Giratina's was interesting, all three were pretty ugly. Xerneas have a grace and beauty that is reminiscent of some of my favorite legendary Pokemon, like Lugia. I really enjoy both designs, so it will be hard to choose between X and Y. I am also interested in discovering what types these two are; Yveltal is obviously some type of flying Pokemon, but other than that, I really have no idea. Yveltal's fiery coloration might signal a fire type, though Xerneas has a less common color combination, black, white, and blue. Usually blue is used with with water Pokemon, though that is not always the case, and I don't believe that is the case with Xerneas. Right now my best speculation is a psychic type. It will be interesting to see how these two are related, and if their typing has traits in common or traits that are opposite (ie shared Dragon type in Reshiram and Zekrom, or opposing elements, as in Kyogre and Groudon).
It interesting to note that Nintendo has announced the new pair of games before any mention of a Ruby and Sapphire remake, breaking Pokemon's previously established release pattern. While I am greatly excited for an entirely new game, I would still like to see a remake of the Hoenn region. It would be nice to see how it might translate with entirely new graphics on the 3DS.
All in all, it looks like we have a great journey ahead of us. We have quite awhile to wait, but that gives me time to finish Black 2 (with school and such, I never got the chance to complete it). That's about all for now.
